San Rechal commits suicide (Social Media)
San Rechal, a popular model and social media celebrity, died by suicide in Puducherry on Sunday. The 26-year-old model, who had recently married and was known for her outspoken opposition to colorism in the entertainment industry, died at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research after being transferred from two other hospitals. According to police sources, San Rechal allegedly swallowed a huge number of tablets when visiting her father's residence. Though she was initially sent to a government hospital and then to a private hospital, she was eventually brought to JIPMER, where she died.
Investigators believe her decision was motivated by tremendous financial stress and emotional pressure. Officials stated that San had pledged and sold off her jewelry in recent months to raise income for her professional goals. She apparently expected financial support from her father, but he declined, citing responsibilities to his son.
A suicide note discovered by authorities said that no one was to be held accountable for her death. However, given the sensitive nature of her recent marriage, a Tahsildar-level investigation has been requested to see whether any marital issues may have contributed to her mental health.
San Rechal had made a name for herself in the modeling industry, not only through her talent but also by questioning the highly ingrained fair-skinned fixation in Indian cinema and fashion. She was outspoken about the injustice encountered by dark-skinned people, particularly women, and frequently utilized her platform to ignite crucial discussions about diversity and representation. She also won the Miss Puducherry title in 2022.
The police are continuing their investigation. Meanwhile, San's sudden passing has sparked online debates on mental health, industry demands, and the ongoing stigma associated with darker skin tones in Indian media.
